Filing Status Question

Registered users do not see advertisement
My soon to be x-husband left me and our child in June of 2013. We are not legally divorced as of yet, but since he left he has not provided any financial assistance to me and our child.

I am preparing my taxes now and thinking that I can file as Head of Household. In looking at publication 501, it appears that I qualify to file this status.

The only concern that I have is that other than my own testimony and records, I have no way of proving that the soon to be x-husband left in June.

What happens if I am audited on this? How can I prove to the IRS that he left in June?

You do not have to prove to the IRS that he moved out in June, unless you are audited. Then you'll need something to substantiate that he moved.

I would keep a daily journal. Maybe a neighbors written statement. Did you change the phone, gas & electric, water bills? If you rent, did you get his name off the lease when he finally moved away - ask the landlord for a written statement. Did he quit his job and move out of the county or state at the same time? If so, and if you know where he worked in July, see if that employer can provide you with something. Heck maybe even a text message . . .
