W2 question....

Registered users do not see advertisement
I have a client that worked as a federal election monitor in his hometown in Massachusetts. He was paid 450.

The W2 he received shows 450.00 in state wages only. The box for federal wages is blank.

I've never, in close to 40 years of practice, seen any instance where wages were exempt for federal purposes.

Payroll and the W2 was processed by a national payroll processing firm. If it were something done in house by the town clerk I'd be inclined to say there was a mistake made on the W2 as issued, but the use of an "ADP like processor" (not the actual processor) gives me pause.

Thoughts?

There are several national tax preparation franchise operators who give their tax "experts" a 10 week training class and then put them to work preparing tax returns. I have seen generally very good results from the payroll tax specialty firms, but even they must get an occasional "10 week wonder".

I decided that an "exempt" wages tag was not sufficient to not report. The taxpayers other items for this year make the consequences of including it contrary to the way it was reported almost zero so ... I reported the sum as wages and attached the w2.
